Firefighters in Southern China’s largest city have rescued a man whose right hand became trapped in squat toilet after he tried to retrieve his dropped mobile phone, local media reports.
Although the rescue operation in Guangzhou took only about 10 minutes, the victim was rushed to hospital as his arm became severely swollen during the ordeal, according to a report on news portal Guangzhou Dayoo.com.
After his phone fell into the toilet, the 40-year-old man lowered himself to try to reach it through the pipe and soon realised he was trapped.
His family poured shower gel down the pipe in the hope of reducing the friction on his arm, but it would not budge.
The family called the local emergency lines 110, 119 and 120 after their attempts failed.
The firefighters used “jaws of life” tools to pry open the pipe to quickly free the man’s arm.
The doctor who examined the man said his forearm was quite swollen but had not suffered any permanent damage.
The firefighters said the family were correct to use lubricants instead of trying to free his arm forcibly.
