Hong Kong reached the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Squash Team Championship in Paris – but face a big test against Malaysia if they are to go any further.
The HK team of Annie Au Wing-chi, Joey Chan Ho-ling and Liu Tsz-ling needed to beat a strong France side to top their group and avoid Malaysia, who boast Nicol David, world No.1 for 109 months until last year.
But in front of a partisan crowd, they went down 2-1 to the hosts, Au and Liu losing hard-fought games after Chan had won the opener.
It means HK will have to raise their game against David and co. in the quarters if they are to match their feat of two years ago when they reached the semis, further than any Hong Kong team had ever gone before.
Malaysia have been a regular nemesis for HK in the Asian Team Championships, beating them in four of the last six finals.
