Wallace Chan’s gemstone peony sculpture is a work of art

Jewel purpose Next month, Wallace Chan will become the first Chinese jewel artist to exhibit at Tefaf (The European Fine Art Foundation) New York. The celebrated Hong Kong artist’s collection will include exquisite rings, brooches and necklaces but the most remarkable piece will be his sculpture of that queen of Chinese gardens, the peony. Named “Rise of Heart”, the piece features 925 rubies, 470 citrines and 500 amethysts, with yellow diamonds creating a vibrant burst of colour at the floral centre. Delicate, colourful butterflies adorn the titanium petals, in a nod to the symbolic duality of the two motifs in Chinese poetry.
